10-year-old petitions school board

A 10-year-old student is circulating a petition asking the Vancouver School Board not to take cost-saving measures that she says will rob her of time with her family.

The Vancouver School Board faces a $17-million budget shortfall and is thinking of shortening the school year by 10 days to save money. The proposed plan also calls for an end to half-day Fridays, for which the board must compensate teachers a full day's pay.

  1. change is hard sometimes but we have to move on. i'm sure mom can find another special day to spend with her daughter. children need to learn how to adapt to change and how to adjust.half Fridays were unheard of when i was in elementry school. if cuts need to be made then i don't see the issue with this one. sorry guys.

  2. No need to be sorry - very legitimate point. I'm trying to imagine my 10-year-old self approaching the principal at our rural school way back when, and suggesting a half-day of school on every Friday... not good.

    On the other hand, what a fabulously confident and engaged young lady - good for her!
