Stop the Cuts Correspondence

Further to the previous post about Alberta Education cuts, I received a letter and a flyer from the ASCA/ATA/ASBA group trying to stop the cuts. To see the flyer, click on the post picture and click here to see the letter. These three organizations are very concerned about these cuts and want to add your concerns to their lobby. Please contact your MLA (Heather Forsyth/Calgary - Fish Creek) to make sure she knows how you feel about this.

  1. I attended a meeting last night put on by SOFA, the "Save Our Fine Arts" Organizational Committee. Further to discussions regarding budget cuts and their affect on curriculum, and in response to Ms. Shutiak's post on the SOFA entry below, I would like to provide a quote from the SOFA informational package. "According to Susan McLeod, Curriculum Manager for Arts Education..."...the revision process for currriculum is not immune to current economic reality. Indeed, all departments in Alberta Education have been affected by economic realities. Arts Education is no exception."" This meeting was well attended and included students, staff, parents, members of government and the press. It was pointed out and discussed several times that although curriculum review is a normal and required process, the mandate to cut $80 million from Alberta Education is going to have a major impact on the review process and proposed changes. Keep in mind that the discussions that are happening now will affect changes that are scheduled to be implemented starting in 2012, so it will be today's elementary students that are most affected.

  2. Thank you Lynn for attending and reporting on the meeting. Again, everyone needs to let their MLA, the Education Minister, and Premeir Stelmach know how they feel about this - please go here and fill in the form - http://www.stopthecuts.ca/contact_your_mla. I'll put this link in the side bar under 'Essential Link List'.
