February Council Meeting

February's Council meeting took place in the Haultain library last night, and was well attended by Council members as well as a few parents. A strict agenda was adhered to, and a lot of important issues were discussed and resolved.

The unusual problem of finding items to spend council money on took up a fair amount of the proceedings - a problem unfortunately not shared by all Councils in Calgary. It's a good idea, if you have the time, to send an email with your thoughts and ideas of programs or items the Council can spend money on as soon as possible. There is a modest surplus which needs to be allotted before the end of March. Give Shane a call, comment beneath the articles you read, or email any of the council members if you have suggestions.

Parent involvement is crucial to ensure that hard-earned funds get allocated wisely. As well, parent involvement shows the CBE that parents with children attending Haultain consider the school to be a valuable resource, and an essential part of the Queensland community. The Board of Directors at the CBE takes parent involvement in schools as one of the indicators of school importance - when school populations decrease, and the decisions of which schools should be closed need to be made, that's one of the aspects that gets considered.

Get involved, and tell other parents to get involved. Commenting on this website, emailing your thoughts and feedback, offering information or photos to put on this blog - all great ways to show your commitment to keeping Haultain as a part of the community.

  3. I was in attendance at last night's council meeting...just wanted to acknowledge what I perceived as some feelings of discomfort surrounding all the technology talk. I think it highlighted a broader issue that exists for those of us over 30: "our kids are citizens of technology in ways we can't be. We don't like feeling that our kids belong to a society that we will always look at from the outside."* I have worked in the IT industry for nearly 10 years, but I still need some time to feel comfortable when it comes to technology and my kids. Council meetings may not be the place to discuss feelings, but this blog might be. Phew, I feel better already...

  4. Well said Annika - we are still traveling frontiers on the cutting edge but its not tech we are dealing with, it is trying to guide our children through that tech. We have no rules or regs to follow on giving that guidance, so we are not as comfortable as with other more traditional things we guide our kids through. I'm in the same boat as you, familiar and comfortable with new tech but not so comfortable with my kids using the same... we'll stumble through.

  5. Since the majority of the student school population make up the lunch program, perhaps the parent council would consider funding additional
tables. There are a large number of students that have to sit on the floor everyday to eat their lunch.

  6. Thanks for commenting Joanne. I have asked about the table problem and understand that we are expecting delivery shortly on more tables. They were ordered in January.
