Please share the information you receive in these emails with your school councils and parent communities.

This is the last Key Communiqué of 2009. I hope you all have a wonderful and restful holiday spent with loved ones. See you in the New Year.

System Meetings:

Area Meetings:

Changes to The Implementation Schedule for Programs of Study and Related Activities:

The dates for the implementation of five areas of curriculum have been revised as of December 1, 2009. The decision to adjust the dates was based on stakeholder feedback.

The English and French revised Implementation Schedule for Programs of Study and Related Activities 2009–2010 and the accompanying Quick Reference Provincial Implementation Dates (2008–2009) are now posted on the Alberta Education website at www.education.alberta.ca/teachers.aspx (English) and www.education.alberta.ca/francais/admin/franco.aspx (French).

CBE Rolls Out New Internet Filtering System:

The CBE recently unveiled a new Internet content filtering product called Blue Coat that is designed to offer access to a broader range of website categories, a higher degree of anti-virus detection and improved ease-of-use. Blue Coat should provide all CBE staff and students with a more accessible and safer service.

The new system uses a colour-coded warning system that alerts all users to potential risks in accessing sites. The enhanced and more sophisticated categorizing method better reflects the amended CBE Internet Policy and provides easier access to information. The system still uses the tiered filtering levels. Auditors Commend CBE on a Healthy Balance Sheet:

The CBE’s Audited Financial Statements and Auditor’s Report for the year ended Aug. 31, 2009 was presented to the Board of Trustees at the public board meeting on Dec. 1, 2009.

The auditors, KPMG commended the CBE for its “healthy balance sheet.” The Board was equally impressed. They noted the high quality of work in Finance saying that this report is a reflection of the fine work of the 50 employees in Finance whose efforts are much appreciated by the Board.

Record Number of Scholarship Recipients and Graduates:

There is a new banner in now hanging in the lobby of The Education Centre. Chief Superintendent Naomi Johnson and Board Chair Pat Cochrane proudly unveiled the banner proclaiming the CBE’s 2009 Academic Results: 6,287 graduates, 3,234 scholarship recipients. These numbers reflect an increase of 8 graduates and 336 scholarship recipients from a year ago.

The 2010/11 Traditional and System Modified calendars have now been finalized. The first day of classes for Traditional Calendar schools is Thursday, September 2, 2010, while the first day of System Modified Calendar schools is Tuesday, August 17, 2010.
