Liberal leader demands apology from Iris Evans for 'outrageous claims'

Alberta's Liberal leader is demanding an apology from Finance Minister Iris Evans, who suggested that in order to raise children "properly" one parent should stay at home while the other goes to work.

"If she really said these things, she must apologize. If she doesn't apologize, the premier must fire her," David Swann said in a statement Wednesday. "These are truly outrageous claims. I have never been as stunned by the sheer arrogance and ignorance of the Tories as I am today.

"In a sense, Iris Evans did us all a favour by revealing her contempt for the sacrifices made by hard-working Alberta families."

  1. Yikes! I am sure there are a lot of parents outraged about this.

  2. Definitely a very personal decision that shouldn't be commented on by a politician who by the way apologized last night.

  3. Every family lives in different circumstances, and has different needs. I find it hard to stomach that someone who is in the public trust can be this ignorant.

  4. You guys are going to hate me for this, but i have to say that i agree with her.

  5. Each parent and family situation needs to be addressed by them, not someone in the public who cannot relate to their situations. Being a stay at home parent is a choice we made and we made the financial sacrifice to do so. Apology accepted but as we all know, words are very damaging and are hard to forget.
